The carbon cycle is the process by which carbon moves through the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. This cycle involves several key components and processes:
Components of the Carbon Cycle:
- Atmosphere:
- Carbon exists primarily as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) in the atmosphere.
- Oceans:
- Oceans absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere. Marine organisms use carbon to build shells and skeletons, and carbon is also stored in dissolved inorganic forms.
- Terrestrial Ecosystems:
- Plants absorb CO₂ during photosynthesis and store it as organic carbon in biomass (leaves, wood, roots). When plants die, this carbon can be stored in soil as organic matter.
- Soil:
- Soil stores significant amounts of organic carbon from decomposed plant and animal material. Microorganisms in soil decompose organic matter, releasing CO₂ back into the atmosphere.
- Fossil Fuels:
- Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) are ancient organic matter that has been transformed over millions of years under high pressure and temperature. Burning fossil fuels releases stored carbon as CO₂.
Processes of the Carbon Cycle:
- Photosynthesis:
- Plants, algae, and some bacteria absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and use sunlight to convert it into glucose and oxygen. This process sequesters carbon in organic forms.
- Respiration:
- Plants, animals, and microorganisms break down organic matter to produce energy, releasing CO₂ back into the atmosphere.
- Decomposition:
- Dead plants and animals decompose through the action of microorganisms, returning carbon to the soil and releasing CO₂ and CH₄.
- Ocean-Atmosphere Exchange:
- CO₂ is exchanged between the atmosphere and the ocean's surface. Oceans act as both a source and a sink for atmospheric CO₂.
- Sedimentation:
- Carbonate minerals and organic matter can settle in ocean sediments, where they may be stored for millions of years. This process can eventually form fossil fuels or carbonates in rocks.
- Combustion:
- Burning of fossil fuels and biomass releases stored carbon as CO₂.
- Volcanic Activity:
- Volcanoes release CO₂ stored in the Earth's crust.
